Accommodations

Participants are responsible for booking their own stay at Lakeview Hecla Resort. When booking your rooms please inform the resort that you are with the Make on the Lake retreat and a room discount will be applied to your stay.

$153.00 plus taxes per person/room/night at double occupancy Please note a $15.00 charge applies to each additional adult. Make on the Lake Room blocks will be released after March 12th. FAQs

What is the cancellation policy?
Tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferable. If you can’t attend, you may transfer your ticket to another participant.

What should I bring?
A list of recommended supplies for each workshop will be sent out in March. In addition, don’t forget your favorite crafting supplies, comfy clothes, and swimwear for the spa!

Beginner Brioche Knitting

with Bev Dyck

Botanical Bundle Dyeing on Silk

with Marilyn Firth

Marilyn is a fibre artist with a focus on botanical dyes on natural fibres. She works in wool, silk, cotton, hemp and linens, and largely uses flowers grown on her farm in St. Norbert, where only ecologically sound practices are used (no pesticides, herbicides or petroleum based fertilizers).

In this hands-on class, you'll learn the art of eco-printing and botanical dyeing, transforming silk into stunning, wearable works of art.

Using flowers, leaves, and other natural materials, you'll explore the techniques for transferring their intricate shapes and colors onto luxurious silk fabric. Whether you're a seasoned maker or new to dyeing, this workshop offers a creative and relaxing experience.

Needle Felted Landscape

Christel Lanthier is a multidisciplinary artist and shepherd living and working on land located in treaty one territory, Manitoba. Christel's work is based in ephemeral and natural materials, and has taught art and craft workshops to the young and young at heart for over 25 years.

Get inspired by the natural world surrounding the beautiful Hecla resort and join Christel in creating a one of a kind painting with wool.

What You’ll Learn:

Have a fun day learning various 2-D felting techniques while needle felting your very own wool masterpiece into a felt sheet canvas.

Materials Needed:

Needles, wool, and wool felt sheet with drawing on it are included in the cost. Foam felting pads are provided for students to use during class and can be purchased separately.

HANDMADE TURKEY WING WHISK BROOMS

with Shalynn van Solkema

Shalynn is a homeschooling mom, and side hustles as an RMT, and a broom maker, dyer and textile transformer as The Tender. Shalynn is a multi-craft enthusiast, a forever learner and a nature lover. The Tender is not so much a business as it is Shalynn’s personal art project, exploring the giving and receiving of care, the magic in the mundane, and the connecting power of handmaking.

What You’ll Learn:

Guided by a beautifully simple tying technique that dates back to the 18th century, this class blends history, practicality, and artistry. Perfect for beginners and seasoned makers alike, you’ll leave with a completed whisk broom ready to use or display as a unique piece of handmade craftsmanship.

Stamp Carving & Sew-On Patches Workshop

with Amanda Borealis

Amanda Borealis is passionate about working to capture the magic of the Boreal Forest, folklore, and history in her work. She is a firm believer that everyone can do with a bit of art in their lives and loves teaching others how to make their own. Like a magpie, she is always drawn to shiny new creative projects and different mediums. Amanda lives in Manitoba, Treaty 1 Territory.

Unleash your creativity in this hands-on workshop where you’ll learn to craft your own unique stamp! You’ll use your custom stamp to print on cotton and linen fabric squares, creating beautiful, washable sew-on patches.

What You’ll Learn:

How to design and carve a relief stamp

Techniques for printing on fabric squares

Tips for creating durable and fully washable patches


What’s Included:

Design templates will be provided for inspiration, or you can create your own (simple designs with bold lines are best for beginners).

Cyanotype Art!

with Sunny Blue

Caroline Wintoniw of Sunny Blue is a Manitoba based multidisciplinary artist whose creative journey began in the world of photography. Caroline was first inspired by the beauty of cyanotype in 2012 when she made her first print. She has been captivated since and continues to create lasting botanical prints as one-of-a kind original art. Deeply inspired by the organic shapes, textures, and rhythms of nature Caroline expanded her practice to include willow work, using traditional techniques to create willow baskets and wreaths. Her evolving body of work is harmonious dialogue between craft and contemporary vision, rooted in a deep reverence for nature. 

What You’ll Learn:

This fun creative workshop you will be introduced to one of the oldest photographic techniques that uses chemistry, sunlight/UV light to make lasting prints in a stunning cyan blue colour. Participants will have the opportunity to explore cyanotype and create their own cyanotype prints using various items, including fresh botanicals.

Materials Needed:

All materials will be provided but Participants are encouraged to bring items they might want to use in the cyanotype print making.

Maywood Backback

with Katherine Magne

Katherine has been teaching adult and youth sewing classes since 2018. She is the biggest cheerleader and enjoys watching participants relax into creativity.

Create your own stylish and functional Maywood Backpack in this immersive workshop! Perfect for both beginners and experienced sewists, this class will guide you through every step of crafting a versatile backpack that's perfect for daily use or adventures.

Skill Level:

Advanced Beginner (should be able to thread your own machine, wind a bobbin, follow seam allowance)

What You’ll Learn:

How to work with durable fabrics for bag-making

Techniques for sewing straps, pockets, and sturdy seams

Tips for adding zippers, closures, and finishing touches

Materials provided:

Kit of Leather parts and all hardware

Black or Navy Waxed canvas (exterior fabric)~To ensure a smooth and efficient experience, all fabric pieces will be pre-cut and marked, allowing you to focus on the fun and rewarding process of assembling your bag.

The front exterior pocket could also be wool if preferred (like Klum House's Pendelton bags) Charcoal or Red is available.

Participants will need to bring:

Sewing Machine (limited rental machines are available reach out if you are in need)

Participants will need to purchase pattern from Klum House in advance.

Participants will also be expected to supply their own lining, it should be marked and ready to go. Lining can be anything from lightweight waterproof, duck canvas, garment weight canvas or other cotton (should be interfaced with woven fusible).

The lining will require 50cm of 115cm fabric (or wider).
